Orofacial Pain

Management

India’s leading orofacial pain clinic — evidence-based diagnosis and

relief for complex jaw and facial pain conditions.

OVERVIEW

What You Should Know

Orofacial pain is a complex specialty that sits at the intersection of dentistry, neurology, and pain medicine. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) — the hinge connecting your jaw to your skull — is one of the most frequently used joints in the body, yet its disorders are among the most misdiagnosed conditions in healthcare.

At I Smile Clinic, Dr. Anu brings specialized postgraduate training in orofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders. Using a structured diagnostic protocol that includes clinical examination, provocation testing, and 3D CBCT imaging, we identify the precise source of your pain before recommending any treatment.

Our approach is always conservative-first. The vast majority of orofacial pain conditions respond to non-surgical interventions — occlusal splints, physical therapy, trigger point therapy, and behavioral modification. Surgery is considered only when conservative treatment has been exhausted.

SCOPE OF CARE

Conditions We Treat

TMJ Disorders (TMD)

Dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint involving the disc, condyle, or surrounding musculature — causing clicking, pain, and restricted jaw movement.

Myofascial Pain

Chronic pain originating in the masticatory muscles, often presenting as diffuse facial ache, jaw fatigue, or referred headache.

Trigeminal Neuralgia

Sudden, severe electric-shock-like facial pain along the trigeminal nerve distribution — one of the most painful conditions known to medicine.

Chronic Facial Pain

Persistent facial pain lasting more than 3 months that doesn't have a clear dental or neurological origin, requiring a specialist approach.

Jaw-Related Headaches

Tension-type and cervicogenic headaches driven by muscle hyperactivity in the jaw — frequently misidentified as primary migraine.

Burning Mouth Syndrome

A chronic burning sensation of the oral mucosa without visible lesion — a complex neuropathic pain condition requiring specialist management.

HOW IT WORKS

Your Treatment Journey

Comprehensive Assessment

A 60-minute initial consultation covering your full pain history, aggravating factors, prior treatments, and a systematic clinical examination of the jaw, muscles, and bite.

Diagnostic Imaging

Where indicated, CBCT scanning provides millimetre-precise 3D views of the TMJ — identifying disc displacement, condylar changes, and bone pathology invisible on a standard X-ray.

Diagnosis & Treatment Plan

A clear, written diagnosis with an individualized treatment roadmap — including rationale for every recommended intervention and realistic outcome expectations.

Active Treatment

Depending on diagnosis: custom occlusal splint fabrication, trigger point injections, physical therapy exercises, joint lavage (arthrocentesis), or pharmacological management.

Monitoring & Adjustment

Regular follow-up visits track your progress. Treatment protocols are modified based on your response — ensuring we reach the most effective outcome for your specific condition.

FAQs

Common Questions

How do I know if my jaw pain is TMD or something else?

TMD typically presents with jaw pain or stiffness, clicking or popping sounds, difficulty opening wide, and pain that worsens with chewing. However, many conditions mimic TMD — which is exactly why a specialist assessment is essential before any treatment begins.
